A simulation is a reinactment of a real-life circumstance. From a technological standpoint, it is a computer-generated circumstance which allows the user to make decisions based on reactions to fabricated situations with similar consequences.

A simulation game is a game that requires the user's ingenuity and expertise to navigate situations that parallel real-life circumstances.

The difference between a simulation game and a simulation is such that a simulation game documents progress through the usage of goal-oriented progress tracking, while a simulation focuses primarily on improving the user's skill instead of compiling a score based on benchmarks.

The use of simulation programs in education enhance learning activities by providing computeruterized models of real or imagined systems or situations that are extremely beneficial to students by either teaching them about something or teaching them how to do something. Simulation programs allow students to be hands on while also motivating greater interest in the subject. Most Simulation programs are usually age appropriate and developmentally valid which means that real learning takes place because the program caters to the specific grade level and/or developmental level of the intened student.

A simulation game, or sim game is a game that contains a mixture of skill, chance, and strategy to simulate an aspect of reality (i.e. a combat simulator game). Some simulation games are intended to simulate the real world while others are intended to simulate a fictional world. Some benefits for simulation games are the ability of games to teach complex problems in the classroom while also enhancing the socialization process that occurs during the game, which may include collaboration, and the importance of taking turns in groups.
